How Many Boxes of Flooring Do I Need?

Flooring is sold by the box, and each box covers a set number of square feet printed on the label. Divide your room area plus waste by the coverage per box to get the box count. Use the Flooring Calculator for an exact number.

Measure the room

For a rectangular room, multiply length × width in feet. For an L-shaped or irregular room, split it into rectangles, measure each, and add the areas. Measure to the widest point — flooring needs to run under door trim and baseboards.

Find the coverage per box

Box coverage in square feet is printed on the label — typically 15–25 ft² per box for laminate and vinyl plank. It varies by plank width, thickness and brand, so always read the specific box you are buying rather than guessing.

Boxes = Area (ft²) × (1 + waste %) ÷ coverage per box (ft²)

Source: Box coverage (ft²) is printed on the label. Round up — you cannot buy a partial box.

Worked example

A 12×12 ft room (144 ft²) with 10% waste = 158.4 ft² ÷ 20 ft² per box = 7.9 → 8 boxes.

Add the right waste allowance

  • 10% — straight-lay plank in a simple rectangular room.
  • 15% — rooms with many angles, closets, cabinets or hallways.
  • 20% or more — diagonal or herringbone layouts.
  • Keep one unopened spare box after install — dye lots change between batches.

Buying and installation tips

  • Buy every box at once so the dye lot matches across the room.
  • Underlayment, transitions and baseboards are sold separately — budget for them.
  • Acclimate plank flooring to the room for 24–48 hours before installing.
  • Order a little extra rather than running short mid-room; returns are usually allowed on unopened boxes.
