How to calculate it

Enter your driveway length, width and thickness to get cubic yards of concrete to order for the pour.

Volume (yd³) = Length (ft) × Width (ft) × Thickness (in) ÷ 12 ÷ 27

Source: Volume = length × width × thickness; 1 cubic yard = 27 cubic feet. Driveways are typically poured 5–6 in thick for vehicle loads.

Worked example

A 40×12 ft driveway at 5 in thick: 40 × 12 × (5÷12) = 200 ft³ ÷ 27 = 7.41 yd³. With 10% waste: 8.15 yd³ to order.

Purchasing & waste guidance

  • Driveways carrying cars are usually 5 in; for trucks or RVs use 6 in.
  • Add 10% waste for spillage, uneven subgrade and form leakage.
  • A driveway pour this size almost always means ready-mix delivery — schedule the truck and crew in advance.
  • Include 4–6 in of compacted gravel base, control joints every 10 ft, and rebar or fiber reinforcement.

Assumptions & what’s included

  • Driveway is a single rectangular pour with uniform thickness.
  • Waste allowance covers spillage, subgrade irregularity and form leakage.
  • Price is per cubic yard of ready-mix and optional.

Frequently asked questions

How thick should a concrete driveway be?

5 in is standard for passenger cars. Use 6 in if the driveway will carry trucks, RVs or heavy equipment. Thinner slabs crack under vehicle loads.

How much concrete do I need for a 2-car driveway?

A typical 20×40 ft driveway at 5 in thick needs about 12.3 yd³ before waste, or roughly 13.6 yd³ with a 10% allowance. The calculator gives an exact number for any size.

Do I need rebar in a concrete driveway?

Most residential driveways use #4 rebar on 24-in centers or fiber reinforcement. Control joints every 10 ft help prevent random cracking. Follow local code for your area.
