How to calculate it
Enter your bed area and depth to get the exact number of mulch bags to buy — works with 1, 2 and 3 cu ft bags.
Source: Volume = area × depth; bagged mulch is sold in 1, 2 or 3 cu ft bags. 1 cubic yard = 27 cubic feet.
A 10×10 ft bed at 3 in deep = 25 ft³. In 2 cu ft bags with 5% waste: 25 × 1.05 ÷ 2 = 13.1 → 14 bags.

- Bulk by the yard is usually cheaper once you need more than about 13 bags.
- Keep mulch a few inches away from tree trunks and house siding to prevent rot.
