How Much Mulch Do I Need? A Bed-by-Bed Guide

Mulch suppresses weeds, holds moisture, and finishes a bed. This guide shows how to pick the right depth, measure your beds, and buy the correct amount in bags or bulk yards.

How deep should mulch be?

Depth is the single biggest factor in how much mulch you buy. Too little and weeds push through; too much and you starve roots of air. Match the depth to what the bed needs.

  • 2–3 in — the standard depth for garden and shrub beds.
  • 1 in — a refresh over existing mulch that has thinned out.
  • 3–4 in — paths and high-traffic beds where weeds are aggressive.
  • Keep mulch 2–3 in away from plant stems and tree trunks to prevent rot.

Measure your beds

For a rectangular bed, multiply length × width in feet for square footage. For curved or irregular beds, break them into rectangles and triangles, measure each, and add the areas. A tape measure and a sketch go a long way.

Calculate mulch in bags or bulk yards

Mulch volume is area × depth. Bagged mulch is sold in 1, 2, or 3 cu ft bags; bulk mulch is sold by the cubic yard (27 cu ft). Add a small waste allowance for settling and uneven spreading.

Bags = Area (ft²) × Depth (in) ÷ 12 ÷ bag size (ft³) × (1 + waste %)

Source: Volume = area × depth. 1 cubic yard = 27 cubic feet; 13.5 bags of 2 cu ft make one yard.

Worked example

A 10×10 ft bed at 3 in deep = 25 ft³. In 2 cu ft bags with 5% waste: 25 × 1.05 ÷ 2 = 13.1 → 14 bags. In bulk that is about 0.93 cubic yards.

Bulk by the yard is usually cheaper once you need more than about 13 bags of 2 cu ft mulch. For a single small bed, bags are simpler and avoid a delivery fee.

Buying and spreading tips

  • Buy all your mulch at once so the color matches across the bed.
  • A wheelbarrow moves about 2–3 bags at a time; plan staging space.
  • Bulk deliveries often have a 2–3 yard minimum — split an order with a neighbor if needed.
  • Refresh — do not replace — existing mulch by adding only 1 in on top.

Frequently asked questions

How many bags of mulch equal a cubic yard?

One cubic yard is 27 cubic feet, so it takes 13.5 bags of 2 cu ft mulch or 9 bags of 3 cu ft mulch to make a yard.

How deep should I spread mulch?

2–3 in for garden and shrub beds, 1 in to refresh existing mulch, and 3–4 in for paths or aggressive-weed areas. Keep mulch pulled back from stems and trunks.

How much mulch do I need for a 10×10 bed?

A 10×10 ft bed at 3 in deep needs about 25 ft³, or 14 bags of 2 cu ft mulch with a 5% waste allowance. In bulk that is just under 1 cubic yard.

Estimates vary. Quantities depend on product specifications, waste, and site conditions. Use these guides for planning, then confirm exact amounts with your supplier before ordering.
